Scrooge sends Kermit a Turkey
A quick PSA — I started a contract position at xAI last month. While I can’t say anything about the work or the company, I can say that I’ve achieved a personal goal which I’ve been working towards for a long time: working on a foundation model. Translation: only a handful of very big companies have the resources to work on the “foundation models” that translate Piles of Everything into Predictions of Pixels. xAI is one of them and is in it to win.
Here is the latest from xAI on what they are up to.

Since launching Grok-2 in August, we have been hard at work improving Grok on 𝕏, adding new features like web search, citations, and our recent image generator, Aurora.
Over the past few weeks we have been quietly testing a new version of the Grok-2 model, which is three times faster and offers improved accuracy, instruction-following, and multi-lingual capabilities.
Today we are excited to announce that we are beginning to roll out this new version of Grok-2 to all users on 𝕏 for free. As always, Premium and Premium+ users get higher usage limits and will be the first to access any new capabilities in the future.
So to continue the Christmas theme: I am no longer feeling like a member of the “GPU poor”. I feel like Kermit after Scrooge brings the turkey!
Merry Christmas, all!
Fred

Congratulations! Sounds like fascinating work.
